Many times teachers are guilty of simply clicking the Spelling and Grammar check on Microsoft as their final edit without stopping to make sure that the material is accessible to all students. “There are also a vast number of ways in which people can set up their computer without any additional hardware. This includes software features like high contrast screen display for people with low vision, and SoundSentry which alerts people who are hard of hearing when the computer makes a noise.” There are simple ways, just like clicking spell check, that you can make your material accessible for vision or hearing impaired students.
For instance, you may think that you always accomodate your vision-impaired student with aids, but did you consider, “About eight percent of men and 0.5 percent of women have some form of color blindness. That means that potentially 1 in 12 readers of your document may not distinguish the colors you designed.”
Education must be accessible to all students, and it is our job as teachers is to make sure we are providing to ALL! Are you? Check out this link for more info: http://office.microsoft.com/training/training.aspx?AssetID=RC063800961033

I am very excited to have my own blog!! I see this as a necessity for today’s teachers, and glad I have taken the first step in incorporating this in my own life.
…and here’s why:
In today’s society, it is extremely important for teachers to reach students on their level by showing their knowledge and excitement in technology. Long gone are the days where teachers can be ignorant of these concepts, and always have a student help figure out what to do on the computer. Today’s teacher must know how to use the technology that students use in their daily lives. Not only does it reach the student on a different level, but once teachers are not intimidated they will also find great ease with posting homework and extras on the internet!
